Bio
Author, poet and award-winning scientist, Annette Libeskind Berkovits, was born in Kyrgyzstan and grew up in postwar Poland before coming to America at age sixteen.
Despite being uprooted from country to country, Berkovits has channeled her passions into language study and writing. She has published three memoirs.
In the Unlikeliest of Places: How Nachman Libeskind Survived the Nazis, Gulags and Soviet Communism is a story of her remarkable father’s survival. It was published by Wilfrid Laurier University Press in September 2014 and reissued in paperback in 2016. Berkovits worked with a translator to make the book available in Poland. It was issued by the Center for Dialogue in Lodz, under the title A Life Full of Color (Zycie Pelne Barw)
Confessions of An Accidental Zoo Curator published by Tenth Planet Press in 2017 is based on her three-decade career with the Wildlife Conservation Society in New York and filled with eye opening, behind-the-scenes stories from one of the world’s greatest zoological institutions.
Her third memoir, Aftermath: Coming of Age on Three Continents was released in 2022 by Amsterdam Publishers. Her first historical novel, The Corset Maker was issued by the same publisher, also in 2022. It was inspired by the author’s mother who was, in fact, a corset maker whose extraordinary artistry was remembered in her native Poland decades after she immigrated to the United States.
Encouraged by readers’ enthusiastic response to her works, Berkovits authored her magical realism novel, The Great Conjunction. It was published by Munn Avenue Press in September 2026. Currently Berkovits is working on a sequel to The Corset Maker. It will be her second historical novel and third novel.
Erythra Thalassa: Brain Disrupted was her first poetry chapbook. It is a mother’s account of her son’s devastating illness. Her stories and poems have appeared in Silk Road Review: a Literary Crossroads; Persimmon Tree; American Gothic: a New Chamber Opera; Blood & Thunder: Musings on the Art of Medicine; and The Healing Muse.
